In Shemot perek lamed gimmel passuk daled it says ״וישמע העם את הדבר הרע הזה״. What was the ״דבר הרע״? Rashi says it was that HaShems shechinah would not rest among them and go with them. What else could it have been?
According to Our HaAruch, Hashem sees that the nation are mourning their fate and as a result began to have mercy. It is very touching to witness Hashem having feelings of mercy on the nation when they are suffering. It displays how despite Hashem never truly has feelings, he can seem relatable to us.
Rabeynu Bachya says that the bad thing they heard was that the shchina left, and he says that it's a midah c'neged midah because bnei yisrael were not behaving appropriately, and were all happy, so when the shechina left, their happiness left, and therefore, they mourned. They were more upset about their happiness leaving than the shechina leaving.
