Tetzaveh #3- Urim V'tumim?

It says in shemot perek 28 pasuk 30 "וְנָתַתָּ אֶל חשֶׁן הַמִּשְׁפָּט אֶת הָאוּרִים וְאֶת הַתֻּמִּים"

What were the Urim and Tumim that are reffered to in this weeks parsha? Chabad.org says they were the two inscriptions of the Divine name. What are other opinions on what they mean and how they worked?

  1. According to Rashi, the Urim V'tumin had Hashem's four letter name inscribed in it. The Urim V'tumin was to be put in the folds of the Choshen Hamishpat.

  2. The Thur HaAroch states that the Urim Vtumim was made by human hands. He said it was hand made by silver/ gold. He figured that the signs that astrologers use to figure out what the zodiac communications are saying, that this is related to that

  3. According to Rashbam, the Urim V'tumin were similar to what was used to worship idols. Meaning, if they had value, which we believe they do, they are very important and holy.

  4. The Tur HaAroch brings another suggestion that the urim and tumin are infact mysticle holy elements. The two things actually go in the Cohen gadol's breastplate and that's what makes the gemstones light up when the cohen asks Hashem a question. These elements are a direct link to Hashem and are hidden in the folds of the breastplate

  5. Ibn Ezra says they were the work of a craftsman, silver and gold but the kay was they were like images that astrologers (baale cochavim) mkae to know the thoughts of the person asking the questions that people asked them.

  6. Rabbi Berel Wein says that the urim vtumim were two large stones on the kohen gadol's shoulder which were inscribed with the names of the avos, and references to all the shvatim. This meant that all the letters of the Hebrew alphabet were on the stones. Important national issues could be decided based on help from Hashem and the letters on the stones. The naviim were the ones who were able to string the letter together and read them accurately and understand the nevuah.

  7. According to the Zohar, the Urim and Tumim were the Forty-two and Seventy-two Letter Names of Hashem placed in the folds of the Chosen that caused the letters engraved in the stones to light up in sequence in order to spell out an answer to a question asked by the Cohen. The Aramaic term is "aspaklarya meira". The term "aspaklarya" has been translated as glass, mirror, looking-glass, speculum, telescope (and more). The basic meaning is that it is the medium through which HaShem is focused and manifested. Not only do we see the words of God, but we also have a connection to him, both through the garments of the Kohen Gadol.

  8. According to a source, the הָאוּרִים וְאֶת הַתֻּמִּים were the different versions of the משכן. The משכן שמים, משכן בארץ, and the משכן that each person creates individually for himself to safeguard his נשמה.

  9. According to Rashi, they lit up the words and "perfected" them. Rashi quotes a midrash which says that the Urim and Turim explained the words, and their predictions were never wrong.
