It says in perek יח pasuk יב that aharon and all the zekanim came to eat bread with yitro. Why didn't moshe join in this meal?
Rashi says after receiving the Torah, Moshe went up to shamyim three times and came back the last time on Yom Kippur. The next day he gave the Torah to beni yisroel. Since Moshe already knew about fasting on Yom Kippur, he did not participate in the meal. However, all the other Jews, who first learned the Torah on the following day, were able to eat because they did not yet know the laws of fasting on Yom Kippur.
According to Rambam, Moshe did join in this meal, but the pasuk did not need to mention his name because Moshe was hosting it in his tent, so his presence was implied. I think that this interpretation is very fitting with the pasukim and is a very logical explanation of why Moshe appears to not be at the meal.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Chizkuni, Moshe did not need to "officially" come to the meal, because the meal was in his own tent. Meaning that Moshe did not have to be invited because he was hosting.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Rashi Moshe didn't join in the meal shared by Yitro and the Zikanim because he served the meal. Moshe acted as a waiter as a sign of respect for his father in law, this does not implies that Moshe fasted, it just implies that he didn't sit down and eat the meal at the same time as the others.
According to Chabad.org moshe went up to heaven 3 times, after Matan Torah, and the last time he came down on Yom Kippur. The next day moshe sat in judgement on the yom hadin and transmitted the Torah to Bnei yesroel. Since moshe knew that you fast on yom kipper he didn't eat. All the other Jews did not know this yet because they didn't get the laws of fasting on Yom Kippur
ReplyDeleteAccording to Rashbam 18:12 it was not needed for Moshe to be mentioned as being at Yitros meal. This is so because the meal was taking place at his tent and because he was the host he did not have to be mentioned in the Pasuk.
ReplyDeletethe rambam says that indeed moshe was there just the pesukim does not mention his name because it was implied since the meal was hosted in his house
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Chizkuni, Moshe didn't need to be invited to the meal because it was in his tent, so the zekanim and yitro came to him
ReplyDeleteChabad.org says that moshe did not need to fast because he had already learned about the mitzvah of Yom Kippur but b yisroel did not learn the laws yet so they did not know about fasting on Yom Kippur but moshe did so he had to fast
